Find large explosions satisfying? Like the odd bit of bickering humour? Enjoy guns and the sounds they make? If you answered yes to all three questions, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the game for you. (Or you’re possibly a terrorist).

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the sequel to the popular FPS game Battlefield: Bad Company, released in 2008. Like its predecessor, Bad Company 2 lets you follow the squad of mismatched, slightly insane characters known as the Bad Company through various slightly hysteric situations. This time, the gang’s been ordered to find a sort of ultimate weapon belonging to Russia, and the quest to find it takes them all over the world, from the icy cold snowlands of Russia to the vast, barren deserts of South America.

The various locations all have a distinct and unique feeling, and they all look amazing. Some of the textures looked a little rough when played on an SD TV, but were all magically straigthened out in HD (as is the case with most games these days).

The sound really stands out

What’s even more impressive than the visuals, however, is the sound. The steaming hot jungle of Bolivia comes alive around you when you’re surrounded by the sounds of millions of tiny insects and animals, and the solitude of the Russian landscape comes to show not through the sight of empty houses, but through the howling wind filling out the emptiness. Having a good soundsystem or a good pair of headphones really amplifies this experience. So I strongly suggest you use either of them when playing this game.

The real strength of the game, however, is the characters. The Bad Company, as loveable as a golden retriever in a knitted wool jumper, really sets this game apart from every other FPS out there. The brilliant squabbling between Haggard and Sweetwater really takes the tone out of all the shooting and makes you smile every time you hear their voices. It can easily be missed when you’re rushing from one group of enemies to the next, however, so take your time to stop and listen to what they’re saying. ‘Cause it’s hilarious. Whether debating over whether or not there’s ever been a war with cowboys in it, or pondering why African-Americans say ‘Fiddy Cent’ instead of ‘Fifty Cent’, you’re guaranteed to laugh every time they open their mouths.

Quite short

The single-player campaign took me approximately 8-9 hours to get through, meaning it’s about as long as its main rival Modern Warfare 2. Then again, I died a lot in this game so it’s probably even shorter than that. There’s a good amount of things to do to keep your mind off the shooting, like driving vehicles and operating advanced weaponry designed to wipe out a village in 10 seconds.

The shooting itself feels very natural; if you face two enemies at once, shifting between the two of them feels very smooth and efficient. While the controls are almost identical to that of Modern Warfare 2’s, the more intelligent AI of Bad Company 2 makes it a much more challenging game. You can’t stay out in the open and expect to be impervious to bullets and grenades, you have to stay behind cover and play smart to get through the levels (as Haggard puts it, you ”can’t play a hero”).

Challenging environment

Some environmental features like fog and snowstorms look great but makes it very hard for you to see what you’re shooting, which is extremely annoying when you’re in the middle of a war zone trying to figure out where you are and who’s shooting at you.To make it a bit easier for you, the U.S government (I guess) has Weapon Supply Drops scattered throughout the various levels, which lets you change your weapon into any weapon you’ve previously found on the battlefield. This is extremely handy in tight situations where you find you really need a sniper rifle or a big assault rifle.

But why shoot when you can…make things explode? The trademark of the first Bad Company game, and of this game as well, is that buildings and cover can be blown up. And how they blow up! The satisfaction of killing ten guys at once by making the building they’re in disappear in a glorious orb of fire and black smoke is, quite frankly, enthralling. So much in fact that I was constantly carrying a rocket launcher with me in case I found something interesting to blow up.

Tactical multiplayer

The multiplayer builds on the foundation of Battlefield: Bad Company’s multiplayer. Let’s be frank, this is a Battlefield game. As such, it’s a much more tactical experience than most other FPS’s. Buildings and cover can and will be destroyed if you linger too long, meaning you have to constantly be on your feet and watch out for tanks and UAV’s. You can tag enemies,  basically letting your team know where the enemies are, and so on.

It’s class based, letting you choose between the Medic, Engineer, Scout and Assault classes. Each class has perks and specific weapons: The Medic class, for instance, has machine guns that are lighter than usual and can give health packs to the other members in the team, while the Engineer class has tools that allow you to repair vehicles (and so on). It’s very easy to grasp, but harder to master. And, it’s dangerously addictive. It may not define online warfare, but it certainly does a good job trying.

Fun, fun, fun

While it’s not the adrenaline-crazed explosion of an action game that Modern Warfare 2 is (apart from the ending, which certainly matched the ending of its rival), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a visually and audibly gorgeous game with smooth controls, a bunch of loveable characters and a rich multiplayer mode. While its harder single-player campaign might be a bit off-putting for Modern Warfare 2-players, the extra challenge pays off as it ultimately makes you that much more satisfied when you’re done with the game. But, above all, it’s fun.
